Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to survey on cosmetic color contact lens wear status of middle school, high school and college students and to provide the data for the right guideline.
Methods: The questionnaire survey was conducted on 500 students(middle school: 186 students, high school: 158 students, college: 156 students) who visited optical shops to purchase contact lenses and consented on this survey from June 2012 to May 2012.
Results: 316 out of 500 total subjects(63.2%) purchased cosmetic color lenses and 191 out of 316 students had over 2 pairs of lenses(60,45%). The most common time for the initial wear was the first year of middle school in 149 students(47.15%), the influence of friends in 236 students(74.68%) was the most common. The lens selection was based on the color in 140 students(43.06%), wearing time of 4-6 hours per day in 86 students(27.22%) and replacement cycle of 1-3 months in 81 students (25.63%) were the most common. For the wearing experience with friends, 102 students(32.28%) answered ¡¯yes¡¯. For disinfection of containers, 220 students(69.62%) answered ¡®yes¡¯, and the replacement cycle of containers of 1-3 months in 76 students(47.27%) were the most common. For the side effects of contact lenses wear, dryness(frequency: about 2.72¡¾ 1.05, 2.79¡¾1.24), discomfort (frequency: 2.43¡¾0.89, degree: 2.39¡¾1.15) in the order appeared.
Conclusion: Cosmetic color lens wear was gradually increased and the initial time to wear was getting younger, but the guidance was insufficient for the management and handling. Therefore it is necessary to guide and after care for the management and replacement cycle of contact lenses and their container.
